The difference between branding & marketing

What is the difference between branding and marketing? I had a conversation recently that made me realize this isn't something everyone knows. I figured I'd clear the air, because knowing the difference between the two will help you tremendously.

The two words are often used interchangeably. But they are not the same thing. Branding is the foundational identity and values of what you stand for. Branding is the "who" and "why" of your business. In a nutshell, branding is your reputation and your company's personality. It's how people feel when they interact with you or your business. To quote my friend, Renee with Renee Lynn Creative, who speaks on this topic a ton, "If you have a business, you have a brand to maintain."

Marketing, on the other hand, is the active strategy used to promote your brand. Marketing is the process of identifying what your target audience wants or needs and promoting your product or service to meet those needs. The goal of marketing is to make your audience take action, usually with a sale.

Okay, so why does this matter? Which one is more important? Both. Both are just as important. Without your foundations, without knowing who you are and who your audience is, you'll create marketing materials that will never land.

So, what do you do if you're reading this and realizing you don't have a strong brand or marketing strategy? Start with your foundations. Who are you? Who do you want to be? How do you want people to feel about you and your brand?

Once you have that, think about your audience. What do you know about them? Tempted to say that your business is for everybody? Here's the thing: when you try to be for everyone, you end up being for no one. Your message gets watered down, and you'll never connect with the people you really want to work with. I'm not saying you need to hyper-niche yourself. In fact, I recommend not doing that, especially if you're newer. I think giving space for your business to grow and evolve — what you do and who you do it for — is healthy. BUT. That doesn't change the fact that if you don't know who it is you're trying to connect with, you'll never know how to connect with them.

At the end of the day, I like to think of marketing as building relationships. Whether you're marketing yourself in person, like through a networking event, a keynote speech, or a conference, or you're marketing yourself in a digital space, you're still talking to people. Even if there's a screen between you. And people want to be talked to like they are… get this… real people. Think about it. We are constantly bombarded by messaging. And now with AI, a lot of it isn't even human. So when something is real and connects with the person it's supposed to, that's when the magic happens. And connection can't be faked. It has to be real. And in order to create a real connection, you have to actually know WHO you're talking to.

As a side note, my friend Renee, mentioned above, is going to be hosting a workshop with me called Align Your Brand to Support Your Marketing Efforts. We’re going to talk about everything I just said above and more. Stay tuned for more info on that!

I'd love to hear where you're at with your own branding and marketing strategy. What questions do you have? Drop a comment!
